scale pattern question Empty scale pattern question

Hi everyone, I'm not a plug builder, not even a little. I did pick up a couple plug kits to get me through the winter. I tested painting a scale pattern on cardboard with a mesh fabric. It did not show the pattern, like the fabric wasnt even there. Using rattle cans by the way, tried less paint, pulling further back etc. Any advice would be appreciated.

I use binder clips to keep mesh fabric on the plug...then spray paint.

i mount my plug to a fly vise (an old one I dont use for teasers or tail hooks) and mount it on a piece of wood....step back about four feet and layer the plug with a light mist. the mesh should be clipped to the belly of the plug every half inch or so and TIGHT. depending on your fabric you might try something different....onion mesh bags, clementine plastic, etc. i have the culinary teacher at my school save everything that comes in shipments so i can check it out before he throws it away. good luck.

hey rebel, i think the point about being tight on the plug could be the answer, asked my wife who is a craft person and she said the same before i read your post. also, do you remove the mesh right after spraying or leave it on ? i was removing it from my test cardboard immediately. thanks for the input.

spray lite coats of paint. let paint dry before taking off the mesh.

yeah i leave it on for a good ten minutes...that is usually enough time for "dry" paint. also, i always throw out my mesh once its been used once. last winter i would get a few uses out of it and although it gets a little stiffer and easier to control you will notice small specks of dry paint ending up on you new paint job......i did at least. hope you get great results!
