Until Zee Bass comes up with a reel that is as light or lighter than my VS150 12.5oz. I won't consider getting one. They are beautiful though. I think the lightest one they make is about 16.9oz that extra weight takes it's toll on you when your casting all night.

Re: Van stal or zee bass
I have the VS 200 and VS250.
Dunkem, throw them in sand and they just work.
Reliable.
From what I have heard about ZB, they have to many problems.
ZB may have great customer service, but I want a reel that does not need customer service.

Re: Van stal or zee bass
I have the 200 and the 150 and I dont think you can wrong with either. I would go with the 150 unless you plan on using it on something over 10'. Then the 200. The 200 is a little big on a 9' and the 150 is a little small on a 10'. The 200 can be used on more rods but for staten island I think the 150 could handle just about everything you would need.
My only question is why go with the bail. Are you using it off the boat? If not go with the bailless you will pick it up quicker than you think and you will never look back. Good luck hard to make a wrong decision with any of these

Re: Van stal or zee bass
I can understand the VS infactuation it sure looks pretty, but it is no longer made in the USA...How can VS charge the same price for a reel that WAS made in the USA and VS moved the reel off shore to make more profit......The ZB is made in the USA and IS serviced in the USA.... You might want to wait awhile longer and consider the Penn Torque Spinner series, also a USA made reel in the same price point as the CHINA made VS....Just a thought

Re: Van stal or zee bass
I fish about 40 hours per week. My reels are under water about 70percent of the time, while getting pretty banged up from rocks. The VS is the best reel on the market bar none. Their service is also in the USA as with most other reels. As far as china goes-- everything seems to be made there, and from what I understand the ZB has begun production there as well. I saw the Penn Torque proto type in Sept. The reel had the same crap grey metal as the Penn slammers and SS. Befroe buying the Penn T I would call them and ask what the gears are made of. Not just the main gear -- all of them... Maybe I will give them a shout and get back to you??
Re: Van stal or zee bass
i say vs.. i dont think most people fish enough to worry about it. there are guys out there that fish everyday like asburyguy and someother hardcore guys but most people dont. i think both are reels are great it just comes down to if u have the means to spend alil more money..or if feel more confident with one or the other..my personal choice is the vs mainly because the guys that i know that fish hardcore or guys i look up to on the beach use them. before this year i had always use the cheaper reels and would go through several a year tearing out gears and bearings on blues and bass. i took the high end reel plung at the end of last season and happy i did so. i know with a littlte mant. i will have a reel for life. (unless this one gets stolen too) yea lock those reels up scumbags are on the prowel for your vs an zb.

Re: Van stal or zee bass
hey crazy4stripers i had the sargus 6000 up until last year the real is a beast but once i got it wet more than twice it started acting up. i actually just fixed it this past winter. Gonna put in on a bait rod again this year, not worth getting it ruined again. But im still getting a vs to last me a lifetime.

Re: Van stal or zee bass
I don't own either one but IMO the Zeebass roter spins way too close to my knuckles. I could deffinately see that being a problem on a cold, wet, night. I noticed that problem in all their sizes. I would go with a VS.
