Surf Guide Question
I have noticed on some custom surf rods that the guide closest to the reel seat is reverse mounted, or mounted upside down. Can anyone explain the reasoning for this or the advantages? I have only built a couple of surf rods and am interested in honing my skills. Thanks

Re: Surf Guide Question
The reason is that it is supposed to help keep the line from piling up and getting wind knots on the stripper. I dont know how effective this is or if it works at all. I think most guys do it cause it looks different.
I don't think it could stiffen up the rod in the butt section at all.

Re: Surf Guide Question
are you talking about the fuji low rider guides the first guide is about a 20 and they are made for braid. I have three rods like this and love them.

From what I understand..It is suppose to help the braided line get off the reel and out through the tip w/ less coiling to the first eye whitch is at the bottom of the top peice of the rod. It olny works on the longer rods using heaver lures or bait.

Re: Surf Guide Question
that is the concept system. They do that becouse the stripper guide is so small the line won't hit the frame before it goes thru the guide. Austrailins are a little backwards LOL only kidding.
Re: Surf Guide Question
I fish an area with a guy that has a guide service and he field tests these rods. He guided a guy 2 years ago to catch the world record weakfish using these rods. They cast far but they have ceramic insides and that is a no no for me. Titanium wire guides for me. You get just a tiny chip in that guide and the braid will bust.
Re: Surf Guide Question
From what the people at Lamglas told me, the new Fuji concept low rider guides have to have the stripper guide reversed to keep the line from wrapping around it during the cast. some rods even have the second gatherer reversed as well for the same reason. (this may explain why they are now going to the new K guides.
