Finally getting some done
It's been a lousy weather year for building plugs on the west coast this winter. Normally I have everything I need for the year done but this year too many rainy, cold windy days this year. Finally this month I have gotten weather where I can pull out the lathe and make saw dust. Problem is the scout fish have shown up and I am now hustling to get gear ready for both coast. Anyway here is a few things I have been working on. Enjoy!

Arty like all good plug builders we are scroungers. The scale pattern is done with a type of netting that I have picked up will snooping around. It can be wedding lace from the fabric store, cloth lace from the front of a pencil bag, plastic lace bags from the grocery store or a plant bulb bag.
Or in this case a plastic lace that I found in a load of junk that was headed to the dumps. When I saw it I thought it would make a good patter.
To add the scaled look is simple. Get a piece of the mesh material and cut it to fit all the way around the plug and a small amount left over. I then use those .25 cent alligator clips you find at flea markets and clamp the material along the belly of the plug. You then will spray the scale pattern.
Spray cans and airbrushes both work. The key is to hold the paint supply away from the lure and spray a very thin coat. You may think that you need to spray a lot of paint but in truth it should be as light as possible. To thick or to close blows the paint under the netting .
I would suggest to any one that wants to try it that they practice a bit before they actually paint a plug. That way you get a good feel.

They will be east in 11 days. My trip to New England is just around the corner. The cigars were designed as to an alternate of pikie fever. Many of us west coast oldies are hooked bad on pikies. They swim nice naturally but they are deadly with a "help me" type of rod and reel action. As you noticed there is no tail hook and I don't like to even put a tag on there. They cast incredibly for a metal lip
Here a picture of an appx. 25lber I caught in the rocks here in 2007. The Photo was taken with my phone camera. To give you an idea of fish size That cigar is around 8 inches.
