Re: Penn/Staling a 704
smitty, i started by sand blasting all the paint off, then hit it with 600 grit wet or dry sandpaper, then we have stuff at work called flitz metal polish. it is for polishing the leading edges of the airplanes. i got a small buffing wheel and put it in the drill press. set the drill speed about midway and after slinging polish all over the garage that it what i came up with. what a mess it made. i just blasted the body and i think i am going to polish that too. it wasnt very hard. getting in the corners is tough but it works ok. now the big question is where can i get the bailess kit for it. do they sell it somewhere? or do i have to make something? i am sick of the bail snapping shut on my other penn so i want to remove it. the gears and bushings look amazingly good for the age. gonna lube it up and see what happens.

Re: Penn/Staling a 704
ok finished it today, less the bail. gonna go bailess the metal for the body was not very good quality, it doesnt shine as well as i would have liked. but i got it back together and i am gonna leave it polished for the spring. if it is too much of a pain to keep shiny i will paint it. one thing i didnt do was weigh it before and after to see how much it lightened it. right now without the bail it doesnt wobble very much so once i get the kit i may have to add or remove weight from it to smooth it out. drag is silky smooth and spins very free. guess i got it back together correctly LOL. so that was fun to do, now on to other things. oh if someone wants to polish one let me know i can do it or you can come over and do it yourself, (its very messy). some tricks i learned, use a dowel and taper it until the spool seats tightly on it then put it in the drill press and spin to sand and polish. it also chamfers the holes so they arent sharp edges. same with the outer housing or cage or whatever its called. what do you think smitty?

You did a great job on it. I like the silver look. If I knew a 710 would come up looking like that I would take you up on your offer to come over to do mine.
Again great job.

Re: Penn/Staling a 704
great now another hobby to spend money on. charlie is the 710 aluminum? if so it can be polished. thanks for the responses guys. when i read the thread it intrigued me to this point. also looking at new pluggin reels after christmas with no money got my butt in gear. it wasnt hard to do and since i didnt have any paint in the colors i wanted polished was the best option. now lets see if it holds up.

Re: Penn/Staling a 704
chris drilling was easy. the polishing took some time. i just punched alot of holes in it evenly around it. prob went too far but i just couldnt stop. if you want i can drill it for you. whats next guys? i was looking at that piece of crap 5500ss and wondering if i could drill that. just to get even with it. LOL, it will be in the yard sale forum very soon. i guess you can put braid on these 704Z's, what is the capacity does anybody know? i have 300 yds of 40lb powerpro to go on it and gonna back it with mono just to keep the water from corroding it. looks much bigger than the 5500. now i want to try it.

Re: Penn/Staling a 704
thanks steve, i get very bored this time of year. ive got plugs turned, a rod in works and my daughter got an autographed brett celik jersey at the eagles game sunday so i had to make a shadow box for it. she is dating a guy who has red zone seats row 2, he took me once best view i could want. game wasnt bad either.
