Re: " Fatfingers "..... "Art and Retrospective"...
I'll be starting here now.
I'd like to use this place to write about building and whatever else comes to mind during that process too. I envision this as maybe a sort of blog, which is what I did on another board; that was very enjoyable for me.
I'd like to write a bit about the good old days too and examine the baits of the builders who came before us...the guys who carved and painted baits 50 years ago using tools much more primitive than what we have at our disposal. Those guys created some truly classic designs in the way of bait profiles and paint patterns. Many of them are still in use today and if you think about it that says a lot.
Here are a few that I built years ago that were a sort of tribute to or copy of the paint styles from yesteryear...they are not that fancy, but then again, back then builders usually stuck to the basics:

Some year, I'm going to spend an entire winter just trying to dupe some of the classic paint patterns that I admire. I think that would be a lot of fun.
More later...

PS...
When I come back I'll talk about how an easy way to achieve the stripes you see on a lot of the baits shown:

Re: " Fatfingers "..... "Art and Retrospective"...
Actually I always wanted to own one of those short buses...see back in my hippie days we used to put paneling in them and a big stereo and well, never mind...
Anyway, the way you can easily achieve those stripes is to get yourself a variety of combs...tape off a few of the gaps and leave a few to shoot through and you can achieve a pretty nice tight stripe.
Simply put your netting down, lay the comb against the bait and shoot a nice even layer of paint between each gap in the comb.
I'll try to post some pictures of some of the combs I use to paint those uniform stripes.
Tip: Go to a women's beauty shop and you'll find a great selection of combs. Just dress overly masculine and try not to attract too much attention.
(You young guys watch out for Cougars...they frequent those places.)

Re: " Fatfingers "..... "Art and Retrospective"...
Here's one more where the stripes were shot using a comb. I shot silver through the comb first (which created silver stripes)...then I placed netting over the bait, put the comb back against the bait again and shot black through the comb over the silver stripes:

Re: " Fatfingers "..... "Art and Retrospective"...
As promised, here's are a few of the combs I use to shoot stripes. Note that I've taken masking tape and cut it into strips with a scissors to block off every other gap in the comb. That allows you to space the stripes a bit and you get a nice layout which is reminiscent of the old style, "antique" baits from decades ago.
Look for the "afro" style combs in the salon supply stores....they tend to have longer teeth and wider gap between the teeth.
If you have "Sally Beauty" shops near you, they have a great selection of combs.

Re: " Fatfingers "..... "Art and Retrospective"...
rocstar, the top bait with the bucktail on the tail hook does sort of walk the dog, but it is a subsurface bait...it is a jerk bait and the muskies absolutely smash them. You work them by casting them out, letting them sink about 2 feet and then you work the bait by sweeping the rod tip about 2 feet and reeling between sweeps.
The bottom bait was a swimmer.
Glad you like 'em.
