new popper prototype...
The weather up here hasnt been very fishing friendly the last couple weeks. Its either calm with thunder and lightning, or sunny and windy. Either way i havent been able to get out much, so ive been busy in the shop. I came up with this popper design, its a little funky!
It's got a glass rattle and a off center thru hole. The weighting is similar to my cuttyhunk popper, just a little heavier in the tail to offset the added wood. The popper face is tapered down from the fattest part of the body too and is slightly smaller in diameter then my cuttyhunk. Weight is probably in the area of 2 1/4 ounces.
Poppers this year have been great at the Sow and Pigs reef, lots of big fish on top. This is the first year that ive caught just as many big fish on top as i have trolling deep divers. The bluefish are all most non-existant at the islands.

Re: new popper prototype...
They look awesome, so the glass rattle is exposed in the top center of the plug?

ya, it glued in with waterproof epoxy then topcoated over. The rattle fits very tight in the hole, its not going anywhere. Its nearly flush with the surface of the lure.

That has a nice futuristic look to it

always cool to see some new stuff going on. i am starting to build a couple different things tomorrow with wood left over from the winter. same thing as you though....not going to come out with a design i've ever done before. nice paint and finish as well. have you casted them yet? can't be as aero as a true cutty.

Re: new popper prototype...
thanks guys, i appreciate the feedback. Im sure they wont cast quit as well because of the tail design, but im hoping the added weight helps. Also the wake created by the tail might help the action.

Re: new popper prototype...
Ill be testing them as soon as i can get out. We'll see how the low line tie works out. I feel its gonna be good. Ive probably done about 15 different prototypes trying different shapes and weighting. Ive tried them in flat water at the docks, but as you guys know they have to work in multiple situations like chop and current. If they work well i might offer them for sale, we'll see how it goes!

Re: new popper prototype...
Well, i did some more testing today and im finally happy with it. Castability is great, the funky tail has negligable effects on the distance and plug rotation while airborn. Not once did the leader get wrapped around the hook (major pet peeve). The action was good, with a variable spray depending on the force of your twitch. I was even able to get a little walk the dog action with slight splashes using a downward jerk as fishing a spook as from a boat or high rock. My final weighting has the ass slightly below the surface with the line tie even with it. I think ill paint some up and put them for sale in the yard sale forum. If anyone wants one painted custom let me know! thanks guys.
