Need some help with plugs Empty Need some help with plugs

Post  AKScuba 5/14/2009, 12:16 am

Im leaning more towards loading my bag with some good wood plugs. Right now I think I have the basics covered but would like more of a variety and mix to throw, I have the following-

Smitty bunker yellow
smitty marble slopehead
smitty slopehead swimmer yellow
smitty popper blue/green
smitty spook Mahi

What should I begin to add to my bag? I was thinking a few metal lip swimmers? More poppers?

Pick up a BC Junior, a Black Label handcarve, A Blueshark (handcarvedlures.com), and a couple needlefish. You'll also need some pencils (RVs, Smitty's, Lex, or One Stars are all good fishing plugs)

My favorite wooden plug is a Beachmaster Junior but they are hard to come by. Brian (BC) makes about as good an imitation as I've found my second choice would be a Lordship Jr.

If you'll be fishing in heavy current areas you may want to pick up a darter as well. Nothing wrong with Gibbs but if you can find a Digger that's the one I'd buy or a LIFishinVT.

If you've got some scratch I would definitely get on Skippy's list and pick up two of his smaller plugs (both in the Jersey Killer paint).

Let me know what you're looking to spend and I can put together a nice plug lot for you.

scuba if you are loading your bag for the year you may want a big variety. if you just want to be ready for the spring and early summer get a big gibbs polaris popper (blue over white) some big pencils (10" - 12") in white, yellow, bunker, herring, etc. and some big (3oz or so) Danny swimmers. buying a slope or diving swimmer would be good as well. one bass i caught last spring inhaled a huge yellow danny and was loaded with about five bunker all about 10" long. don't think a plug is "too big". the plug builders suggested in here get a thumbs up as well. i like throwing gibbs into schools of fish just in case someone invited huge bluefish. after i know it's fairly safe my favorite (always more expensive) plugs come out.

for the fall get some 1-2 oz swimmers, needles, and thin metals...that usually will do the trick if past becomes present again this year.

I have a few bucktails but not enough of a variety of weights to really cover it all.

4oz spro, green/white

and I think a 1 oz yellow

and a few lighter ones for back bay and light rods. Any suggestions on how to do that?

SS darters and Bottle plugs are all ways in my bag i would not leave home without them along with a good couple of youzorie mag darters and their jumbo crystal minnow plus a good couple of needles and poppers for the morning blitzes. theres more but thats the generally the big part of what i bring.
