Finished A Few New Ones
I just finished these up today.
All are off center turned.
And all three are 5" long and weighing in at 1 3/4oz.
I had a little problem turning this last off center one.
It snapped off at the tail while doing the last bit of lathe work and bounced off the wall.
So I took what was left and did some hand carving, and hand sanding on it. I think I did ok saving it.
And I'm happy with the results.
I have to thank Smitty for giving me some pointers on painting the gill plates.
I also went into the "How To And Tutorial Forum" and read up on it.
There's alot of great info from the past in there.

Re: Finished A Few New Ones
nice work. Do you use a table top or full size lathe ?

Re: Finished A Few New Ones
Paddle I use the bench lathe from harbor freight. It's either a 10" or 12".
The only thing I wish it had is a speed dial adjustment on it. But I have never had a problem with it in 3 years.

THANKS FOR INFO! i wanted to get my own to turn plugs. Have been bying blank kits to assemble and finish from saltys. I saw one at Harbor Freight but wasnt sure if it would be worth it compared to expensive name brand table tops. I will give it a shot

Re: Finished A Few New Ones
say captain ahab.......off center turning is where you set your turning stock for your plug a little off center from dead center on your lathe......and carve a little at a time......then reposition the plug on the other side of dead center and carve a little at a time ....till your plug comes out a little oblong........charlie G is the master of offset turning and has known to take out basement windows with one single turn of the lathe ........hardhat and safty glasses is a must..........thats when he had to much pepsie in him

Nice work CG Really like the profile's and the paint.
That off center stuff scares me. I'd need full armoured suit to do that.

Thanks for the positive feed back Frank, with your skills I respect your judgement and criticism.
The off center isn't that bad frank and after you try and do one it's no biggy.
I want to try to do a hand carve like you do so well, soon.
can I ask do you make your won lips ? And how do you know what size lip to use for say a bomber size hand carve ?
Happy Holidays to you and the Family Frank

Super wee plugs Charlie... love the 'FIRE-EYE'. I have to imagine you've done something there, does it show up in normal light? Red goes on a bit down under water.. great effect.
