Suffolk calls for moratorium on new clamming permits
(05/10/10) WOODBURY – Suffolk County is calling for a moratorium on new clamming permits in the towns of Brookhaven, Babylon and Islip.
Officials say this would mean anyone who has not had a clam permit for two years during 2006 through 2009 will no longer be able to request one.
Babylon and Islip have already approved the measure but Brookhaven has yet to act.
Long Island’s clam population is struggling even though millions have been spent re-seeding the waters with baby clams.
Either this or they'll just charge out the wazoo to get one.
