Are you using binder clips to hold your net pattern?
After spraying, just wait a few minutes to let the paint dry a bit then remove the mesh/net pattern. I hope this helps....Good Luck.

Re: painting scales?
sure thing it can be done with cans......... you can do almost anything with cans but the BIG KEY is less is more really less is more.
even if you think you did not get any color on the plug when scaling i bet if you take the netting off you will be surprised how much and how crisp the scales will look.
i did this plug with can paint .....for a example

Re: painting scales?
FF, It sounds like your not letting the paint ( that your scaling over ) dry enough... before you put that net on the paint needs to be completely dry.

Re: painting scales?
yeah all i use is rattle cans. i let my bottom coat dry a day before scaling. the thing about latex and other paints is that they feel and seem dry but you are actually touching a "skin" of paint covering moist/gassed paint. the skin peels off and you get your problem.

Re: painting scales?
I agree with Smitty, less paint and hold the rattle can far away from your work, when you think it is good take it back 6-10 more inches....the mist paint is what will give you a nice scale look.. also if you hold the plug on various angles you can add multiple colors on a single scale job( See Smitty's Water Drops demo)... and what Euro said, I find the use of clips helps when you use the angles method.

Re: painting scales?
ok,, sounds like your not controlling the spray to well and ending up with to much paint on your work,,,, You should google up some graffiti caps for spray cans,, there are a bunch of web sites,,, check these out for some ideas,,,, Good luck,, you never know what you mind find on there,,,,,

Re: painting scales?
FF ok your using rattle can.. So your base color for scale is 100% dry no bs let sit for 24 hours... Ok so we now know its totally dry now we take the scale pattern of choice lay the mask on plug... Use cothes pins to hold tight its what i do you only need the mask in contact with body lightly not super tight on it.... spary very light coats of color with about a 5 mins flash time between.. do them till you think its good with color... now if you just doing lets say yellow with the scales silver... wait a few minutes after last coat bout five... Carefully undo clothes pins and PEEL the pattern off dont lift dont slide it... if you put the seem length ways on the plug you can peel it back around to remove with no issues to scales... now do your fill on belly and back.. again very light coats those scales will disappear quick with new paint going down.. let dry and clear or epoxy what ever you want to call it...
