Minivin5's Herring / Mullet..........
Just in time the end of summer and the fall run. Mullet are cruising the beaches right now. The pattern I did this evening is Herring that if stripes where applied would also be my Mullet pattern.
Plug shape of choice is a Big O, 6 inches long and roughly 2 ounces, carved Basswood.
I first seal the plug with epoxy, with in 1.5 hours time I an sanding with 400 grit as I prepare for the primer coat.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I let my primer gas for at least 12 hours before my base coat. The base coat I am using is Silver Pearl.......
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I next hit the plug with a mixed green that I use, over the back.....
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Next I high lighted some areas pink pearl and some gold pearl........
(Now if you were to follow the Striped Bass tutorial that Etch put up from this point on you will have yourself a Striped Mullet)
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Then scale the plug over with a mixed dark gray pearl (very lightly)

Now I turn this into a Herring, I hit the back with metallic blue Rust O and fog over that with Rust O black....Now I top coat to prepare a nice working surface for my fins and eyes and any last minute touch ups......

Here is a Striped Mullet for comparison, the mullet has reflective pink / gold belly and sides, the camera does not do it justice......

After my first top coat is dry to the touch I add my Kill Dot and Fins (See Fatfingers Tutorial) ans touch up any unsightly blemishes that are visible with some fogged plain pearl. Add my eyes and final top coat.....

Angled Side views ...

Side views with flash to see the interference in the top coat....

And there you have my Herring pattern....
Enjoy~ Vinny

I use Basswood and AYC mostly to hand carve, but I did a WRC last night and it took me less effort to carve (less dense). I dont know about steel but my finger tips and nails are all scared up from the hand planer,lol......
