Re: Anybody use a fly rod for Salmon???
I use my 7,8,9wts, but recently bought a 13' Spey 8/9 for salt/steelhead and 14' 9/10 for salmon season....and stripers. B/c of the possiblity of limited casting room, a spey is usable anywhere on moderate sized eastern rivers. But if you have a good rollcast while using some split shot, an 8wt will serve you well for steelies...9wt or larger for salmon (they get some pretty big salmon swimming out of lake ontario!)
Egg flys and nymphs (size10-12 black stoneflys work well) for steelhead. I'm not a salmon expert, I use whatever the shop recomends at the time. But always have some flashy bright flys in the box.
Salmon season is September through early November, Steelhead season is October through April.
Hope this helps.
