stingray id???????????????
hey guys i saw a huge dead ray on the beach today maybe 50 to 70 lbs but it was very odd looking it did not have a long "whip" like tail it looked like it had fins like a shark for its tail in the back... it was very thick and had small eyes it was blackihs brown in color...........a guy there said it was a "sea cow" i think he just made that up when i asked him wat it was but anyways can anyone help me out.....i googled every skate and ray known to be in nj waters and nothing was a match unless someone altered the ray......jfp

did it look like this. could have been a cownose ray with the tail bitten off. if so it's here about two months early.

Atlantic Angel Shark?
Sounds to me like an Atlantic Angel Shark. Sharks, Skates & Rays are in the same fish family. I think it's fairly rare for our waters but is possible. Remember the guy who caught the tarpon in South Jersey a few years back? Anything is possible I suppose. The link below has great photos and description of the Atlantic Angel Shark. Let us know if that's what you think you saw after browsing that link. I'm real curious as to whether or not that's what it was.

Check out the Atlantic Torpedo Ray - they don't have a whip tail. They will also give you a heck of a shock!

Re: stingray id???????????????
I have not seen one personally, but I saw pictures of one. The person said he was trying to help it back into the water and it shocked him! I thought it was a pretty cool ray - not like the damn skates we haul up all the time.
