Whats different about this popper ,other than the Square head,is how it works on the surface and how it casts.
Sure it pops but whats different is the bubble trail it makes. This is something a little different than most every thing out there. When the fish are taking surface lures I'll carry a spook or two, several different pencilpoppers, a razorback , a polaris style swimming popper, a "standard popper" and a Squarehead popper. Why, bacause they all work the surface in different ways and the fish will often prefer one over the other. Or the conditions will dictate which one has the best chance of attracting the attention of Mr. Linesider.
When cast in average conditions it casts about the same as most standard poppers. But when the wind is hard in your face for some reason this lure penetrates better than most. If i had to guess why it has something to do with the aerodynamics and the way it's weighted.
It's weighted the same way most pencilpoppers are and it floats the same as well, nearly straight up.
This brings me to something else different about this popper. In those windy conditions mentioned above. When i cast it out there I've had good luck with this lure retrieving it as if it's a pencil popper. Honestly it's a poor pencil popper because it won't hold a nice PP type action. It's sloppy and harder to get to swing back and forth. BUT that's what's attracting about it , it 's noisy and sloppy and erratic and in those conditions it's worked for me.
Both here in Raritan Bay and on Cape Cod.
