Bass, bass, bass..
To give you a flavour of British fishing..
I posted a previous one on the Scottish Highlands; 'Game' fishing, as we call it, at it's best. Up there, by the way a 'fish' is a salmon (Atlantic), anything else is named, specifically.
Today, here is a sample of why I sought out your site in the first place..
The European Bass, or just bass..
Yeah, no stripes.
Ask any UK angler as to his favourite fish & chances are, it will be this one. We love our bass.
The fish is smaller & more shy than your wonderful specimen (commercial pressure is great, too) but can still be found in decent numbers if you're keen.
So, an early start (still dark outside), few cups of tea & after the chores round the farm & giving the dogs a run, I'm off in the preloaded truck.
A two-hour trip gets me to Ilfracombe, on the North coast of South-West England's peninsular.
A quiet, rural corner of Britain but with a difference.. a 30 foot difference. 'Cos that's the tidal range there, second only in the world to West Coast Canada & bass, as you know, love tide.
Here, there are races galore.
Our boat is a 38 footer & we set off on an ebbing tide to fish over low water. Yes, LOW water. The tides are so fierce & downright dangerous, we fish then & even then around the edges only. It can be quite fun!
Light gear.. 12lbs class rods, reels & braid to match.
Flowing traces, 'Portland' rigs (Google it, or pm me), single v sharp 3 or 4/0 hooks (I use Owner AKI). Hook lengths are flouro', use ordinary mono & pay the price..
Bait is sandeel. Earlier we use live but dead is all we can get now (..keep it moving, boys).
We head offshore to the first race.
Depths go from over 100 feet to less than 30 in seconds. React fast, or lose your gear. It's snaggly down there.
The fish lie just behind the peaks & take with a tap, tap, WHAM!!
Don't strike, just wind into them. The fight is fast furious & jagging.
Bigger fish head uptide, steady like.
Get it right & you get one of these..
Or like this one..
Best pace of tide is 1.5 to 1.8 knots but we got fish today right up to 4.0, WHAAAMMM!! That's fun.
After initial strike, it's best to back off on the drag to allow for lunges & plunges near the surface. Braid is not forgiving but allows use of lighter leads & you all need to use the same setup to prevent tangles.
Hey, who brought Charlton Heston on board???
A happy crew...
We got 30 between us & a few pollack. Ideal.
Now, two hours home, my chores, a beer & will sleep well tonight...
