I've done my own but hate to try with someone's
A 706
A 710
All you need is a cordless drill and a few drill bits.

Re: Penn/Staling a 704
Sorry for not getting back to you faster.
I take the rotor cup off by taking the main shaft screw out inside the reel and then pulling the shaft out. Then remove the rotor cup retaining nut off in the bottom of the rotor cup. And hold it in my hand to drill, but you could lay it on it's side to drill it.
I put blue painters tape on the rotor and lay out my hole pattern then drill with an 1/8th inch bit. Then drill again with the size bit I want the final holes to be.

Re: Penn/Staling a 704
the aluminum on the 704's is very easy to drill. just do like charlie said and lay out the pattern on some tape and then start small and ream to the size you want. i drilled the snot out of mine and it doesnt look too bad. just remember to sand down the edges of the holes after drilling they can be very sharp. dont ask how i know that

AWESOME WORK! Dozer you are THE MAN. I did a 710z a couple of years ago. It came out pretty good, but the buddy closed his shop and headed south. I'm left with no tools and many dreams. I just purchased a 704z tonite on Ebay and now I'm really thinking about drilling my new reel. The oval holes are a very nice touch.

Dozer sweet job on that drilling and layout
I hope you post pictures of it when it's all finished.
Have you decided on the color.

Go here: http://alantani.com/index.php
If they (the members) do not know how to do it to a reel it probably cannot be done!
Just had Bryan Young upgrade and customize my collection off Saltist Spinners - WOW, like a whole different reel
He also did a Fin Nor Ahab that is super slick now
