I'm Penn/Staling a 704 and would love to know if there is anything special I need to know?
I also have other reels which I am wondering about but won't post if I'm just wasting my time typing here.

I've done a few myself. What questions do you have. I start by cleaning the outside and inside of the whole reel with brake cleaner. Thats after I take off the bail and handle, and remove the drag washers.

I have had the reel apart, due to having it lock up on me. so while replacing the bushings and the main, I drilled and cut the cup Penn/stal style. ( I should take pictures so I have a record). What I'm wondering now is 1.) How to get the slots to have that smooth look to the edges? I drilled upper and lower holes and used a Dremil tool to cut the area between holes to create the slots. ( I even made the short slots over the bail hold back and counter weight area). They are straight, but have a sharp edge look to them. I'm wondering should I try to round over the edges? I know that to clean it out I need brake cleaner, I De-greased it to punch out the old bushings. 2.)What I am wondering is Paint or powder coat? The place by me wants $100 bucks to sand blast and basic black powder coat it. 3.) is it worth removing the anti-reverse lever and filling in the hole? and how do you keep it in anti-reverse after you remove the lever? Thanks for any help on these questions.

if you hit the rest of that reel with aircraft paint remover, the paint will come off with ease. then start to sand it. start with 400 grit then bake it at 175 degrees for 10 minutes. sand again with 600 then bake again, 800 then bake again. i took mine all the to 1500 grit then applied nevr-dull which is a wadding polish for soft metals like aluminum. comes out with a nice mirror finish. i am going to leave mine polished so if you are going to paint i would say not to sand to 1500 grit as it leaves it very smooth. the paint will not adhere very well to that. if you can get it powder coated that would be much more durable. i have a 704 that that is completely customized and finished off with powder coating and it looks great. hope this helped you out some

The guy that did the work makes them. They come with the reel when you have the work done or you can just order the handle. I have another reel that I'm sending to him at the end of this month

Slotting the cup was easy. I drilled a hole equal to the middle of each segment on the inside of the cup. then with a carpenters angle decided the angle I wanted the slots to be at and marked them out in pencil. and drilled the second hole about 1/4 " from the lip of the cup. When I drilled the holes I used a block of wood clamped to my drill press so I had square to the face of the cup. I then took my Dremmel tool with a cut off wheel, I cut between the holes. (the lines which I drew for the angle I used as guides for the dremmel tool). the hardest part was the short slots where the counterweight and bail switch arm is. Hope this helps.

i'm working on one now and want it to be just polished. my black one is powder coated. i have drilled to holes in the bottom of the cup but haven't done the sides yet. the only part i have left to polish is the spool. the other reel that i have is going to the guy that did my first one but i want it to be a different color and as far as the design goes for the rotor cup since i have one that is slotted like a vs i think the next one will be different. just not sure what yet. thanks for the explanation of how you did yours. think i will try that on mine

I have a daughter getting married new years day. that and Christmas with 6 kids and 7 grandkids has me on hold till th new year, but I'm looking to finish my 704. want to do a 710 greenie but get the Z spool. And there is a great crosswind modification that I saw on another Surf site that makes braid lay nicer on the spool by having a "S" slot in the crosswind rather then a straight slot. I'm looking for a shop that may make one for me. But lets keep the thread going with pics and Ideas.

i saw that thread on the other site and have seen you there too but my screen name is different over there. that is a great idea with the crosswind and i would love to do it or find somebody to do it. the only thing is that i'm a little iffy on the solder. seems to me that under a good amount of pressure it would snap and then you would be in a world of chit. maybe i'm wrong because i think its an awesome idea. if you find anyone to do it let me know and i'll do the same. i'll post some pics of my polished 704 tomorrow. it will only be the side plate, housing, and rotor cup since i'm still working on the spool. if you can find a Carboloy line roller for your 704 it will really help with braid since they are much more braid friendly than the ss line roller they come with. i just put one on my custom 704 and i can already see the difference it makes. they are hard to find though

ok i have a 710Z and this intrigues me. you guys drill out the cup and spool, then some polish them. i was gonna buy a new surf reel since i have a 5500 graphite that i absolutely hate. the bail snaps back when i cast hard and i have given the fish gods many jigs and some of my own homemade plugs. what does this do for you? obviously lightens it up, also i like the bailess idea. any feed back is appreciated. looks like the answer i have been looking for. i have the reel and it is on a guest rod now. hasnt been used in a while. can you polish a 710? do you clear them afterwards? also if i paint it with a good aircraft quality paint will it hold up? sorry for all the questions just looking for some winter projects. gonna take it apart tonite and glass bead it tomorrow.

Funny thing is i just did a little work to mine today...
I have a problem with my reels all of them they get all scratched and chipped by sitting in my rod holder so i got a rubber coating spray to coat the foot and shaft of the foot of the reel so it will no longer get all chipped up from the PVC caps on my rod rack..I will post pictures as soon as it dries.. Then i will be selling it lol lol!
