Upper Bay 10/3-10/4
Sat
The plan was to target bass for the start of the outgoing and switch to tog for the remainder of the outgoing. The flood tide was 930 and about 1030 11 the tide started to fall. Loaded up with dozen bunker and dozen crab and headed out towards the channel. Anchored up and and started to chunk with the tide. Im not a fan of bassin on a full moon. A few days before or after but never on it. As the tide started to run, it all of the sudden switched from going N-S,to a Ne-Sw. Ive seen this before with strong tides and winds. It shifted off the hole and made our lines run to the port side. Riss managed two ratty stripes and had one throw the hook. I wasnt having any action. She was using smaller chunks, as i was using heads. 3 hours after the tide switched my pole started bouncing and then reel starts screamin!!! Gave a 8 second count and cranked down the drag and began to reel(inline circle hooks, no need to cross the fishes eyes on the hook set)Line came tight and the rod bent over Fish ON! Battled the fish for 10mins in the current and finally got her to the boat only for her to dive and run Back to the surface and Riss with her excellent netting skills we landed the fish.
Measured in @31" and i would guess 12-15lbs. FIRST BASS of the fall run!!!!Gotbak to the dock around 3ish in time for a birthday party for a freind.
My buddy Joe, invited riss and my self to go out night fishing on his 30fter. We sad sure. Plan was to head back out to the same spot and fish a few hours at night to get some more bass. Left the dock at 10pm,with another buddy boat to calm moon lit bay. On the way out noticed some lighting in the distance and some clouds moving in. Turned on the radar and saw that it was well south of us and heading north north east of us. After a few rain showers and great lighting shows the storm passed the moon came back out to light up the bay. After catching sharks and a few oyster crackers we made a move alittle bit south. Only to find more junk. Back at the dock @6am sunday moring Drove back to the fort and fell asleep with fishing clothes still on!!! First over nighter on the bay and it was awesome!!!Keeper fish would of been a bonus, but still had a awesome time!
After filleting the bass, I was real curious to see what the stomach contents were. A whole bunker that was half way decomposed. Heres my theory-
The full moon brought that fish into the bay and stacked up on the structure and fed. Waited untill it was hungry again on the outgoing and took my noggin the fish most likely was a ocean fish. The colors were real clean(green) and clear. Unlike resident bass who have a darker tint to them(from being in the silty bay). Also last year riss got her first bass of the fall on the exact same weekend/month/tide ect. as I did. Its only going to get better from here!!!
